Atividade para os alunos: tradução da biografia de Martin Luther King
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was bom in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929.
Georgia and other southern states of the United States had been slow to give equat
nights to African-Americans as well as poor whites and King wanted a change.
When he became a minister in 1954 he began a long road of leadership using
nonviolent methods. Many people joined his movement and in 1963 he had a huge
gathering of people to Washington D. C., to protest unfair government. Because of his
efforts many rights were assured to all races.
Dr. King developed his ideas through his own experence, as well as through
reading books by the American writer Henry David Thoreau and the Russian writer Leo
Tolstoy. He especially admired the example of Mahatma Ghandi, who had successfully
led a nonviolent revolution to free india of British rule.
At 35 years of age, Martin Luther King Jr. was the youngest man to ever receive a
Nobel peace prize. He was awarded the prize in 1964 for helping Americans change
unfair laws against African-American people. However, not everybody accepted his
ideas. On April 4, 1968, at age 39, he was killed by an assassin's bullet.
Today Dr. King's birthday is a holiday in the United States and is celebrated in
honor of his struggle for democracy.
